Appledore & Instow Regatta

APPLEDORE & Instow Regatta, the sixth regatta in the West of England ARA ten regatta Championship series, attracted a larger than normal entry but the poor launching conditions produced a few scary moments and the cancellation some events.

The blustery north westerly wind blowing in from the estuary made the water very choppy off the Instow shore, from where the crews launched, and made getting to and from the beach very difficult. The Dart Totnes Ladies Under 14 double scull of Lucy Chudley and Katie Prior capsized about ten metres off the shoreline as they were coming ashore after winning their race. The pair were in the water clinging to their boat for 10 to 15 minutes before a rescue boat arrived and had drifted 50 metres in the strong wind and tide. They came ashore cold and wet but were soon out on the water again winning their quad race.

The Appledore side of the river Torridge was fine and course conditions were reasonable although the final couple of hundred metres of the course proved tricky. The weather did not get any better during the afternoon, and if anything it worsened, so the officials moved the start about 300 metres back up Appledore Quay and a decision was made at around 5pm to cancel all the single and double sculling race and just row the remaining Championship fours.

Dart Totnes won eight events and the Championship of the day, and Dartmouth and Torquay chalked up a win each.

A lack of entries at Men’s Senior A and Senior B coxed fours made the Men’s Senior C coxed fours the major Championship event. Dart Totnes had won the previous five regattas and continued their good form with James Lovering, Sam Pettit, Ryan Galimore, Simon Kerswell- Jensen and cox, Fiona Hollingsworth, beating a club B crew of Alex Woodward, Matt Vincent, Ben Bryon-Edmonds, Tim Whittet and cox, Steve Clarke, by four lengths to keep their unbeaten record and increase their lead in the Championship to fourteen points. The Dart Totnes B crew had made the step up from Novice where there was no opposition. Bideford Reds were third a further one and a half lengths behind.

At Men’s Under 18 coxed fours the Dart Totnes crew of James Lovering, Sam Pettit, Elliot Legg, Simon Kerswell-Jensen and cox, Fiona Hollingsworth, increased their lead in the Championship to eight points with a five length win over Dartmouth’s Richie Jeffs, Chris Ely, Nick Crang, Mike Tilley and cox, Marie Dayment.

In the Men’s Championship coxed quadruple sculls Plymouth beat Bideford Blues and Bideford Reds to win at Under 16 and at Under 14 the Dart Totnes crew of Luke Reiser, Emily Edwards, Joe Oswald, Callum Jones and cox, Dakota Ferrara, suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Bideford Reds who beat them by four lengths but they still lead the Championship by six points.

In the Ladies Championship coxed fours there was not a race at Senior A with the Senior B being the highest status race. Dartmouth’s Anna Lloyd, Fiona Dayment, Lisa Jeffrey, Suzie Bowden and cox, Marie Dayment, ran out one length winners from Bideford Reds with the Dart Totnes B crew of Maggie Hawkyard, Cathy Lovering, Natasha Prior, Georgie Cleasby

and cox, Steve Clarke, third. Exeter won the Senior C by three quarters of a length from Plymouth with Bideford Blues A a further one and a half lengths down in third place. The Dart Totnes crew of Rue Wimalasiri, Sarah Molesey, Debra Keane, Mary Ford-Weston and cox, Fiona Hollingsworth, beat Bideford Reds by a distance at Novice. There was not a race at Under 18.

In the Ladies Championship coxed quadruple sculls Bideford Blues beat Exeter by three lengths at Under 16 with Bideford Reds third. At Under 14 the Dart Totnes crew of Lucy Chudley, Katie Prior, Harriet Pope, Verity Phillips and cox, Dakota Ferrara, rowed over to win when their opposition, Bideford Reds, failed to finish the race.

The few Championship single sculls races that were completed resulted in wins for Nick Cleasby of Torquay at Men’s Senior A; Pearce of Exmouth at Men’s Novice; Callum Jones of Dart Totnes at Men’s Under 14; and Emma Reiser of Dart Totnes at Ladies Under 14.

In the supporting events the Dart Totnes A crew of Lucy Chudley and Katie Prior won at Ladies Under 14 double sculls and Peter Atkinson of Dart Totnes won at Men’s Veteran single sculls.

Paignton Regatta on Saturday (August 14) provides the venue for the seventh regatta in the 2010 West of England ARA Championship series.
