Avon Gorge Head THE Head of the Avon Gorge, organised by the City of Bristol Rowing Club, attracted 30 entries for the 4.25 miles upstream course on a flood tide from Shirehampton to Hotwells just 300 metres upstream of the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The event offered just one division with the majority of entries coming from Bristol clubs but there was a strong entry from Exeter. Dartmouth was the only other West of England ARA club to have entries with three Junior scullers.
Overall winners in conditions which were quite flat, a bit bouncier in places, with a mixture of tail and head winds were a City of Bristol Senior 2 quadruple scull in a time of 25minutes 41.9 seconds.
Best of the Dartmouth entries was Sam Tilley who sculled at Ladies Senior 3 single sculls. She finished 19th overall in 33:31.0 which gave her second place in her status behind GB trialist Lucinda Sanders of Exeter. Sam commented, “My race was pretty good, clashed with Lucinda on one corner though.”
Sam’s brother Michael, sculling at Men’s Under 16 single sculls, was 27th overall in 35:22.0 and first in class from clubmate Richie Jeffs. Richie was competing in his first single sculls competitive event and finished 29th overall in 36:44.7
