City Of Exeter Regatta

THE City of Exeter Regatta, the fourth regatta in the West of England ARA ten regatta Championship series, attracted a massive entry of 237 entries from clubs around the region and beyond. The 55 events necessitated 140 races over the 400 metre three lane sprint course on the river Exe at Exeter Quay.

Conditions were good with a tailwind causing very little problem for the crews during the eight hour programme.

Dart Totnes were again in prolific form with sixteen event wins although surprisingly the Championship of the day shield was presented to the home club. The calculations are most likely to be questioned by the Totnes club in the coming days. Dartmouth picked up three wins and Torquay two and both Paignton and Teign Scullers recorded their first regatta wins of the season.

The major Championship event, the Men’s Senior A coxed fours, attracted four entries with Exeter and Minerva Bath winning the two opening heats to go through to the final. Dart Totnes and Torquay then faced each other in a repechage heat for the third berth which Torquay took by half a length. In the final Minerva Bath won by three quarters of length from Exeter with Torquay’s Rus Bammens, Gary Letori, Nick Cleasby, Mike Cresser and cox, Tineaka Ellis, a further half length down in third place.

There were no entries at Men’s Senior B coxed fours and at Men’s Senior C coxed fours it was an all South Devon final with the Dart Totnes crew of James Lovering, Sam Pettitt, Steve Clarke, Meyrick Tooley and cox, Rob Crowter-Jones, winning by a length from Dartmouth’s Matt Sheldon, Liam Boyd, Chris China, David Langmead and cox, Marie Dayment, with Torquay’s Chris Akers, Paul Dallyn, Jamie Dawe, Nick Cleasby and cox, Tineaka Ellis, a further two lengths down in third place.

At Men’s Novice coxed fours Exeter were one length winners from the Dart Totnes crew of Alex Woodward, Matt Vincent, Ben Bryon-Edmond, Tim Whittet and cox, Chelsea Cleal, and there were no entries for Men’s Under 18 coxed fours.

In the Men’s Championship coxed quadruple sculls Plymouth won at Under 16 by three quarters of a length from Bideford Blues with the Dart Totnes crew of Ryan Dunn, Jordan Hall, Alex Rowe, Simon Kerswell-Jensen and cox, Rob Crowter-Jones, third a further half length behind and at Under 14 the Dart Totnes A crew of Luke Reiser, Fraser Tooley, Tom Larcombe, Callum Jones and cox, Dakota Ferrara, were three quarters of length winners from Bideford Reds with the Dart Totnes B crew of Emily Edwards, Tom Parry-Jones, Toby Wilkinson, Jasper Schroeder and cox, Maggie Hawkyard, third a further one and a half lengths behind.

In the Ladies Championship coxed fours Falmouth were winners at Senior A by one and a half lengths from the Dart Totnes crew of Lizzie Broad, Cathy Lovering, Natasha Prior, Georgie Cleasby and cox, Heather Jolly, and Exeter won the Senior B by three quarters of a length from Minerva Bath who were a further length from Bideford Reds. At Senior C Exeter B were one length winners from Dartmouth’s Hanna China, Fiona Dayment, Lisa Jeffrey,

Suzie Bowden and cox, Marie Dayment, with third placed Plymouth a further half length behind and at Novice Bideford Blues were one length winners from rivals Bideford Reds who were just a canvas from third placed Exeter B. At Under 18 Exeter were winners by just three feet from the Dart Totnes crew of Jade Knight, Jessamy Larcombe, Emma Reiser, Louise Hawkyard and cox, Chelsea Cleal.

This same crew with Rob Crowter-Jones coxing were easy two length winners from Exeter A at Ladies Under 16 coxed quadruple sculls with Castle Dore a further three quarters of a length down in third place. At Ladies Under 14 coxed quadruple sculls the Dart Totnes crew of Lucy Chudley, Harriet Pope, Verity Phillips, Phoebe Clarke and cox, Chelsea Cleal, were one length winners from Paignton’s Ashley Harper, Ella Collins, Louise Manning, Rachel Tucker and cox, Tina Robertson, with the Dart Totnes B crew of Katie Prior, Fiona Hollingsworth, Emily Edmonds, Jasmine Hladkji and cox, Maggie Hawkyard, third a further three quarters of a length behind.
