Falmouth Regatta

FALMOUTH Regatta, the fifth regatta in the West of England ARA Championship series, was held on Stithians Lake a few miles inland from Falmouth near Redruth.

The weather was wet and windy and a crosswind on the six lane 1000 metre course produced a light chop on the water. Without any public address the dismal scene produced a regatta without atmosphere or character.

Most clubs took depleted squads on the long journey into Cornwall on a busy Saturday. The normally prolific Dart Totnes returned with six wins and Dartmouth with one.

With no entries at Men’s and Ladies Senior A coxed fours the major Championship event of the day was the Men’s Senior B coxed fours between Falmouth and Torquay with Falmouth running out five length winners from Torquay’s Chris Akers, Jamie Dawe, Nick Cleasby, Ian Wilson and cox, Polly Eldridge. Despite a couple of crew changes the Dart Totnes crew of James Lovering, Simon Kerswell-Jensen, Ryan Gallimore, Meyrick Tooley and cox, Louise Hawkyard, made it five wins in a row for the club at Men’s Senior C coxed fours with a one length win over Exeter. Exmouth were a further half length down in third place.

In the Men’s Novice coxed fours Falmouth were half length winners from the Dart Totnes crew of Alex Woodward, Matt Vincent, Ben Bryon-Edmonds, Tim Whittet and cox, Fiona Hollingworth, with Exeter a distance behind in third place. In an all river Dart affair the Dart Totnes crew of Alex Rowe, Simon Kerswell-Jensen, James Lovering, Meyrick Tooley and cox, Steve Clarke, kept their one hundred per cent record with an easy win over Dartmouth’s Richie Jeffs, Chris Ely, Mick Crang, Mike Tilley and cox, Marie Dayment, at Men’s Under 18 coxed fours.

In the Championship coxed quadruple sculls Plymouth won easily from the Dart Totnes crew of Ryan Dunn, Jordan Hall, Fraser Tooley, Callum Jones and cox, Fiona Hollingsworth, with Castle Dore a further one and half lengths behind in third place at Under 16 and at Under 14 the Dart Totnes A crew of Emily Edwards, Fraser Tooley, Tom Larcombe, Callum Jones and cox, Dakota Ferrara, kept their unbeaten record with a distance win over Bideford Reds who were a distance from Plymouth.

In the Ladies Championship coxed fours Falmouth were five length winners at Senior B from Exeter who were a further length from the third placed Dart Totnes crew of Maggie Hawkyard, Cathy Lovering, Natasha Prior, Georgie Cleasby and cox, Chelsea Cleal, and at Senior C Falmouth and Exeter dead-heated for first place with Dartmouth’s Jenny Pichowski, Fiona Dayment, Lisa Jeffrey, Suzie Bowden and cox, Marie Dayment, a distance behind in third place. At Novice Exeter were five length winners from Bideford Reds who were a further two lengths from Dart Totnes in third place and Exeter won the Under 18 by five lengths from Falmouth.

The Ladies Championship coxed quadruple scull provided a win for Bideford Blues by one and a half lengths from Exeter at Under 16 with the Dart Totnes crew of Heather Greenberg, Iris Tapper, Jessamy Larcombe, Louise Hawkyard and cox, Chelsea Cleal, a further two lengths down in third and Plymouth beat the Dart Totnes crew of Katie Prior, Harriet Pope,

Fiona Hollingsworth, Josie Bryant and cox, Dakota Ferrara, by two and a half lengths at Under 14.

In the Championship single sculls there were wins for Brunyee of Falmouth at Men’s Senior A; Wilkins of Falmouth at Men’s Senior C; Angell of Exmouth at Men’s Novice; James Lovering of Dart Totnes at Men’s Under 18; Dawson of Plymouth at Men’s Under 16; Callum Jones of Dart Totnes at Men’s Under 14; Lewis of Falmouth at Ladies Senior B; Sam Tilley of Dartmouth at Ladies Senior C; Owens of Falmouth at Ladies Novice; Hutchings of Exeter at Ladies Under 18; and Newson of Castle Dore at Ladies Under 14.

There was just one South Devon winner in the supporting events and that was British Masters Champion Peter Atkinson at Men’s Veteran D/E single sculls.
