Monmouth Regatta

TWO Junior scullers from Dartmouth competed at the two day Monmouth Sprint and Regatta held on the river Wye. The Sprint on the first day was held over a 750 metre course and the Regatta over 1500 metres on the second day.

Over the sprint course Mike Tilley and Richie Jeffs both went in the Men’s Under 17 single sculls. Mike lost by two lengths in the semi finals to a sculler that had beaten a British Junior squad sculler earlier on in the day. This was a good result considering that the sculler had beaten the GB sculler by a verdict of easily. Richie lost his semi-final to a very strong competent sculler from Bewdley by a distance of four lengths. At Men’s Novice single sculls Mike reached the final by beating a City of Bristol sculler by three lengths in the first heat and then a Cardiff University sculler. Mike had sat half a length up on the Cardiff sculler throughout the course until a small mishap by the Cardiff sculler in the last 250 metre when Mike went on to win by two lengths. In the semi finals Mike beat an Evesham sculler by the verdict of three lengths. However, he then lost the final by two lengths to another sculler from Cardiff University, who had beaten Mike off the start from which he never recovered. Richie Jeffs lost his first heat to a veteran sculler from Bradford on Avon, who was a very strong competent sculler. The verdict was three lengths. Over the regatta course on the second day the Men’s Under 17 single sculls event was a straight final between Mike and Richie with Mike going on to win with a verdict of easily over his clubmate. Richie lost in his first heat in Men’s Novice single sculls to a sculler from Oxford City by a verdict of three lengths. Mike had a bye in his first heat of the Men’s Novice single sculls. In the quarter finals it was a very close race between Mike and the same Evesham sculler from the previous day. Neither sculler was more than two feet apart for the first 1250 metres of the course. Mike then took the rating up and won by a verdict of two lengths.

Mike said, “This was my favourite and best race yet and I am glad to say I managed to win it. This hard race took it out of me which showed in the semi finals where I was beaten by a strong Reading University sculler by four lengths.” “All in all, a good weekend, although Richie didn’t win any races, he has shown massive improvements in his technique”.
