Paignton Regatta

PAIGNTON Regatta, the seventh regatta in the West of England ARA ten regatta series, attracted a strong entry of 125. And with water conditions good the 37 race regatta was rowed out as programmed over the 1000 metre course from Preston beach to the Harbour with nine of the Junior events over 500 metres.

The skiff rowing proved to be an excellent finale to Paignton Regatta week which had staged three rowing regattas – gig, FISA Coastal and skiff.

Dart Totnes again swept all before them to win the Championship of the day in convincing style, winning eight West of England ARA Championship events and one of the supporting events. Dartmouth took home three trophies, Torquay two and Teign Scullers one. But in spite of all their efforts Paignton drew a blank but can be justly proud of arranging three superbly organised rowing regattas in the space of eight days.

With no entries for the Men’s Senior A and Senior B coxed fours the Men’s Senior C coxed fours became the major Championship event. Dart Totnes, who had won at the previous six regattas, maintained the unbeaten record with the crew of James Lovering, Sam Pettit, Ryan Gallimore, Meyrick Tooley and cox, Fiona Hollingsworth, beating Dartmouth’s Matt Sheldon, Liam Boyd, Chris China, David Langmead and cox, Chrissy Rugg, by a length. Dart Totnes also won the Men’s Novice coxed fours with Alex Woodward, Matt Vincent, Ben Bryon-Edmonds, Tim Whittet and cox, Steve Clarke, comprehensively beating Exmouth by four lengths with the Teign Scullers crew of Mark Eastman, Mark Treais, Ian Matthews, Nic Bourne and cox, Jacinta Jackson, third. Completing a Dart Totnes hat-trick of the three main Men’s Championship coxed fours events rowed were the Dart Totnes crew of Sam Richardson, Simon Kerswell-Jensen, Meyrick Tooley, James Lovering and cox, Steve Clarke, who beat Dartmouth’s Richie Jeffs, Nick Crang, Chris Ely, Mike Tilley and cox, Sam Tilley, at Men’s Under 18 coxed fours.

In the Men’s Championship coxed quadruple sculls Plymouth were four length winners from Bideford Blues at Under 16 with Paignton’s Lewis Lyden, Michael Wrenn, Lewis Bayley, Michael Maddocks and cox, Ella Collins, third. At Under 14 the Dart Totnes crew of Callum Jones, Emily Edwards, Joe Oswald, Luke Reiser and cox, Dakota Ferrara, were three length winners from Bideford Reds.

In the Ladies Championship coxed fours Exeter beat Bideford Reds at Senior A and Exeter also beat Reds at Senior B with less than a length covering the first three crews. Dartmouth’s Jenny Pichowski, Anna Lloyd, Lisa Jeffrey, Suzie Bowden and cox, Marie Dayment, were third. At Ladies Senior C Exeter were two length winners from Dartmouth’s Jenny Pichowski, Fiona Dayment, Lisa Jeffrey, Suzie Bowden and cox, Marie Dayment, with the Dart Totnes crew of Jan Richardson, Zoe Butcher, Kath Freeman, Nikki Pettit and cox, Simon Kerswell-Jensen, a further three lengths down in third place and at Ladies Novice Bideford Reds were one length winners from the Dart Totnes crew of Jackie Hamilton-Kates, Sally Parker, Kath Blackborow, Mary Frood-Weston and cox, Maggie Hawkyard, with Torquay’s Ali Bennett, Izzy Shaw, Charlotte Smith, Sarah Vosper and cox, Teinaka Ellis,

third. At Ladies Under 18 Exeter beat the Dart Totnes crew of Devon Cleal, Jade Knight, Emma Reiser, Louise Hawkyard and cox, Steve Clarke, by three lengths.

In the Ladies Championship coxed quadruple sculls Bideford Blues beat the Dart Totnes crew of Heather Greenberg, Jade Knight, Emma Reiser, Louise Hawkyard and cox, James Lovering, by four lengths at Under 16 with Bideford Reds third and at Under 14 the Dart Totnes crew of Lucy Chudley, Fiona Hollingsworth, Emily Edwards, Phoebe Clarke and cox, Dakota Ferrara, were five length winners from Paignton’s Ashleigh Harper, Poppy Disney, Ella Collins, Rachael Tucker and cox, Sam Hallett.

In the Championship single sculls there were wins for Nick Cleasby of Torquay at Men’s Senior A; Simon Kerswell-Jensen of Dart Totnes at Men’s Senior C; Mike Tilley of Dartmouth at Men’s Novice; James Lovering of Dart Totnes at Men’s Under 18; Bolding of Castle Dore at Men’s Under 16, Callum Jones of Dart Totnes at Men’s Under 14; Hutchings of Exeter at Ladies Senior C; Reinoso-Maset of Plymouth at Novice Ladies; and Blackoe of Plymouth at Ladies Under 14.

South Devon winners in the supporting events were Dartmouth’s Jenny Pichowski, Anna Lloyd, Steve Wallis, Terry Wallis and cox, Marie Dayment, at Mixed Senior A coxed fours; Dartmouth’s David Langmead, Suzie Bowden, Lisa Jeffrey, Chris China and cox, Chrissy Rugg, at Mixed Senior C coxed fours; Torquay’s Mike Cresser and Nick Cleasby at Men’s Senior A coxless pairs; Nic Bourne and Patrick Gaskins of Teign Scullers at Men’s Senior C double sculls; and Peter Atkinson of Dart Totnes at Men’s Open Veteran single sculls.

With just three Championship regattas remaining South Devon crews and scullers are prominent in the West of England ARA Championship stakes. The Dart Totnes Men’s Senior C coxed four has already secured enough points to win their Championship; The Dart Totnes Men’s Under 18 coxed four need just a win at Torquay; the Dart Totnes Men’s Under 14 coxed quadruple scull have a seven point lead and need just three points; the Dart Totnes Ladies Under 14 coxed quadruple sculls crew lead Paignton by four points; Nick Cleasby of Torquay leads the Men’s Senior A single sculls by a point; Simon Kerswell-Jensen of Dart Totnes leads the Men’s Senior C single sculls by two points; James Lovering of Dart Totnes has won the Men’s Under 18 single sculls following his win at Paignton; Callum Jones has an eight point lead at Men’s Under 14; and Sam Tilley of Dartmouth leads the Ladies Senior C single sculls by four points.

The ‘circus’ now moves onto Torquay for the Torbay Royal Regatta on Saturday (August 21). The regatta has attracted 114 entries for 35 events with the first race at 10am, the final race at 2.30pm and the prize-giving at Hollicombe Park at 3pm.

Torquay members are hoping that 98 year-old Harry Cook will pay them another visit. He recently turned up at the club and mesmerised members with his rowing stories of yesteryear. He was part of Torquay’s Championship winning Senior coxed four of 1936. They were so taken with Harry that they neglected to get any contact details and would love to meet him again.
