                                South Hams Sports Awards

DARTMOUTH Rowing Club’s most successful Junior squad in the history of the club joined young sporting heroes from across the South Hams to be honoured at a gala ceremony at The Watermark, Ivybridge.

Organised and supported by Sports South Hams and South Hams District Council, the event was held to announce the winners of the annual Sport South Hams Awards, which celebrates sporting achievements of all forms.

This year 67 nominees representing over 20 sports were nominated for a host of awards, including Young Sports Person of the Year, Indomitable Spirit, the Endeavour Award for sporting commitment, Team of the Year and Coach of the Year.

Presenting the awards were Olympic guest of honour Michaela Breeze, who gave an outstanding presentation on her experience at the Beijing Olympics and John Coates, Chairman of Sport South Hams. Certificates were presented by Cllr Basil Cane, the District Council Chairman, Cllr Rufus Gilbert, the District Council Representative for Sport South Hams and Cllr Michael Saltern sponsor of the team award. The awards evening was sponsored by Trevor Lethbridge of Greencrop Ltd.

The Dartmouth Juniors, who this season won four West of England ARA Championships and six events at the South Coast Junior Regatta as well as the overall points trophy, were awarded a certificate to mark their achievements.

Stars of the show included Sonny Webster from Ivybridge, currently the British U17 Champion and part of the Great Britain Squad for World Class weightlifting. Sonny won the Young Sports Person of the Year Award and was overall winner of the 12-15 age group. Also celebrating was Kathryn King who won the Indomitable Spirit Award. Kathryn competed in the Disabled South West Junior Games in May and gives 100% effort and determination in everything she does. The Digger Cooper Commemorative Trophy went to Keith Reed, a founder member of the Ivybridge based Erme Valley Harriers Athletic Club South Hams Sports Awards
