End of Season Dinner and Awards

Dartmouth Rowing Club celebrated a superb season by holding an extremely successful End of Season Dinner at their clubhouse. Catering for the fifty plus members and guests was undertaken by the Royal Castle Hotel in familiar and comfortable surroundings with the necessary bar profits in these days of the īcredit crunchīremaining with the club.

Principal guests included the Town Mayor, Councillor Debbie Morris, and Colin Myrone of Plymouth Rowing Club who was holding the position of the President of the West of England ARA for the evening. Plymouth had been handed the Presidency of the West of England ARA in February in the form of club stalwart Derek Rickard. However, at the beginning of August the upturned single scuill of the popular 60 year-old had been discovered on the river Plym and his body was later found on the mud flats near Laira Bridge. He had been airlifted to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Dartmouth were the most prominent of the South Devon clubs during the 2008 season winning five Championships.

The major Championship, the Menīs Senior A coxed fours, had been awarded to Dartmouthīs Matthew Isaac, Phil Langman, John Hart, Terry Wallis, and cox, Louise Bellamy, a Championship that Dartmouth has won on more occasions than any other club since the inception of the Association in 1896. However, the thirty-fifth winning of the regionīs major Championship has taken a little while coming since the 34th win in 1994.

Dartmouth were also Championship winners at Menīs Novice coxed fours with David Langmead, Liam Boyd, TJ Lang, Chris China and cox, Marie Dayment; at Menīs Under 16 coxed quadruple sculls with Michael Tilley, Richie Jeffs, TJ Lang, Matt Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment; at Menīs Under 18 single sculls with Chris China; and at Ladies Under 18 single sculls with Sam Tilley.

During the evening the club awards were made with Veteran Barry Langmead and Matthew Isaac sharing the Senior male rower of the year award; Chris China winning the Junior male rower of the year; Chrissy Rugg the female rower of the year; Marie Dayment the coxswain of the year; Yorkie Lomas the clubperson of the year; and Jane Williams the Tea Lady of the year. The award for the Senior female of the year was not made. A special award was made to Barry Langmead for towing the trailer of boats year on year. End Of Season Dinner & Awards
