City of Exeter Regatta
THE postponed City of Exeter Regatta rowed over a 400 metre course on the river Exe along Exeter Quay provided some exciting and close racing. The water level was some two foot lower than that on the scheduled July 12 date when the regatta had had to be cancelled because of the deluge of water running off Dartmoor. Despite some rowers having to withdraw because of taking holidays on a date when no West of England ARA regatta had been scheduled, entries still topped 160 requiring 100 races. However, the event was tinged with sadness following the death the previous day of Derek Rickard, the West of England ARA President. His upturned single scull had been found on the river Plym and his body was found on the mud flats near Laira Bridge. He was airlifted to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The popular 60 year-old was still an active sculler and was entered to take part in the City of Exeter Regatta. He had done much to promote the sport of rowing in his home city of Plymouth and was enjoying his year as President of the Association. He was looking forward to his club hosting the South Coast Championships in September. A minute’s silence was held at the beginning of the Exeter Regatta and several youngsters from the clubs around the region wore face paint in Plymouth colours and black arm bands as a mark of respect. All five South Devon clubs picked up silverware and Dart Totnes collected their fourth Championship of the day. To date the two Dart clubs, Dart Totnes and Dartmouth, have made a clean sweep of the Championship of the day trophies this season. Dart Totnes added another ten event wins, Dartmouth five, Teign Scullers two, Torquay one and with a little help from Elliot Barton Paignton picked up three trophies. The main event of the regatta, the sixth in the West of England ARA ten regatta Championship series, was the Men’s Senior A coxed fours but with the withdrawal of Falmouth it was left to Exeter to row over for the cup. At Men’s Senior C coxed fours Paignton’s Elliot Barton, Robbie Tucker, Simon Henshaw, Paul Henshaw and cox, Charlotte Lane, took another step towards winning their Championship. And a win at their home regatta on August 16 will secure the Championship. They currently lead Exmouth by 19 points. They beat Exmouth by half a length with Dartmouth’s Jack Kirby, Liam Boyd, David Langmead, TJ Lang and cox, Marie Dayment, a further two lengths down in third place. The same Paignton crew tested themselves at Men’s Senior B coxed fours but were beaten by Exeter by a length with Dartmouth’s Matthew Isaac, Phil Langman, John Hart, Terry Wallis and cox, Louise Bellamy, a half length behind in third place. In the Men’s Novice coxed fours the Dart Totnes crew of Steve Clarke, Alex Woodward, Robin Willoughby, Ed Burnett and cox, Maggie Hawkyard, beat Exeter by a length and at Men’s Under 18 coxed fours Exeter beat Bideford Reds by just a foot with Exmouth a further three lengths behind in third place. Dartmouth’s Michael Tilley, Richie Jeffs, TJ Lang, Matt Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment, further increased their Championship lead at Men’s Under 16 coxed quadruple sculls with just a one foot win over Championship rivals Dart Totnes with the crew of Matt Vincent, Drew Parkinson, Ollie Garton, Ember Lagden and cox, Steve Grimes. Bideford Reds A were a further length down in third place. Dartmouth now lead the Championship by 14 points. At Men’s Under 14 coxed quadruple sculls the Dart Totnes crew of Simon Kerswell-Jensen, Sam Richardson, Louise Hawkyard, Emily Bibby and cox, Chelsie Cleal, beat Bideford Reds by a length. This Dart Totnes crew, which has included females all season, lead the Championship. In the Ladies Championship coxed fours there was no race at Senior A and Exeter beat Falmouth by a canvass in a close race at Senior B with Bideford Reds just another two feet behind in third place. Bideford Reds A won the Senior C by two lengths from the Dart Totnes crew of Catherine Wiseman, Sarah Mackness, Cathy Lovering, Natasha Prior and cox, Chelsie Cleal, with Bideford Reds B third. And at Under 18 Exeter beat Bideford Reds by three lengths with the Dart Totnes crew of Devon Cleal, Jess Phillips, Christie Rhys Brown, Jacqui Gibbard and cox, Chelsie Cleal, a further length and a half behind in third place. In the Ladies Championship coxed quadruple sculls Exeter A beat Bideford Reds A at Under 16 with Exeter B third and at Under 14 Bideford Reds beat the Dart Totnes crew of Emily Bibby, Katie Prior, Lucy, Louise Hawkyard and cox, Chelsie Cleal, by three quarters of a length with third placed Bideford Blues a further one and a quarter lengths behind. In the Championship single sculls Paignton’s Elliot Barton won both the Men’s Senior B and Senior C and Jess Phillips of Dart Totnes won the Ladies Under 16 single sculls.
