 Dartmouth Royal Regatta

THE Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta, the penultimate regatta in the West of England ARA ten regatta series, attracted a massive entry of 170 from 17 clubs from around the region and along the south coast. All five local clubs – Dartmouth, Dart Totnes, Paignton, Torquay and Teign - were well represented but there were also large contingents from other clubs, particularly Bexhill, Exeter and Bideford Reds.

The large entry required 50 races mostly over the 1000 metre course between the two car ferries. However, four races - the Men’s Open eights, the Ladies Open eights, the Men’s Senior A coxed fours and the Men’s Senior B coxed fours - were rowed over 2000 metres from Noss to the Lower Ferry.

With the arrival of the Regatta Guardship, HMS Argyle, scheduled for 3.30pm the organisers had to produce a tight programme with an earlier than usual start. Racing started at 9am with the Men’s Under 16 coxed quadruple sculls. The traditional last race, the Men’s Open eights, completed the programme finishing two minutes before the 3.30 p.m. deadline.

There was a good spread of results but Dart Totnes took the trophy for points in fours, pairs and double sculls and Bexhill won the points trophy for the single sculls. Dart Totnes also had nine event wins. Dartmouth ended the day with six, Torquay one and Paignton three with Elliot Barton involved in all three.

The main Championship event, the Men’s Senior A coxed fours, produced a fine race with Bexhill A, BTC Southampton and City of Oxford all in the hunt at halfway. Bexhill then upped their rate and opened a two length lead over the next 250 metres. Bexhill went on to win by three lengths from BTC who were a further three lengths from City of Oxford.

The recently elevated Paignton crew of Elliot Barton, Robbie Tucker, Simon Henshaw, Paul Henshaw and cox, Charlotte Lane, were headed off the 2000 metre start at Men’s Senior B coxed fours by Dartmouth’s Matthew Isaac, John Hart, Phil Langman, Terry Wallis and cox, Louise Bellamy. At 250 metres they were back on terms and went on to win by three lengths.

Exeter were winners by a length at Men’s Senior C coxed fours from Bideford Blues who were half a length from third placed Bideford Reds. Bexhill were winners at Men’s Novice coxed fours by a length from Dartmouth’s Matt Dayment, Chris Watson, Jack Kirby, TJ Lang and cox, Marie Dayment, with the Dart Totnes crew of Matt Wali, Kevin Eyres, Robin Willoughby and Ed Burnett and cox, Chelsie Cleal, third. At Men’s Under 18 coxed fours Bideford Reds were left to row over.

In the Men’s Championship coxed quadruple sculls Dartmouth’s Michael Tilley, Richie Jeffs, TJ Lang, Matt Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment, the Under 16 Champions, pipped the Dart Totnes crew of Merryck Tooley, James Lovering, Laurie Budden, Elliot Legg and cox, Steve

In the Ladies Championship coxed fours City of Oxford beat Falmouth by two lengths at Senior A and Falmouth beat Exeter by a distance at Senior B. At Senior C Bideford Reds A beat Falmouth by one and a quarter lengths with Bideford Reds B third. Bexhill and Exeter B dead-heated at Novice with Bideford Reds third and at Under 18 the Dart Totnes crew of Clare Gardner, Christie Rhys-Brown, Amy Kirkup, Jacqui Gibbard and cox, R Crouch-Jones, were three length winners from Dartmouth’s Hanna China, Chrissy Rugg, Sam Tilley, Fiona Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment, with Bideford Reds third.

In the Ladies Championship coxed quadruple sculls at Under 16 the Dart Totnes crew of Emily Murphy, Christie Rhys-Brown, Amy Kirkup, Clare Gardner and cox, R Crouch Jones, beat Exeter by three lengths with Bideford Reds third and at Under 14 the Dart Totnes crew of Jessamy Larcombe, Katie Prior, Devon Cleal, Louise Hawkyard, and cox, Chelsie Cleal, were three length winners from Bideford Blues with Bideford Reds third.
