Falmouth Regatta
FALMOUTH Regatta, the fourth regatta in the 2008 West of England ARA ten regatta Championship series, was held on Stithians Lake a few miles inland from Falmouth near Redruth. Again at this venue chilly conditions greeted competitors with a strong wind over the 1,000 metre course creating choppy water with some ‘white horses’ at the exposed start. As a result of the choppy water the Under 14 double and single sculls races were shortened to 500 metres. Some clubs, including Dart Totnes, sent fewer than their normal regatta entry to Falmouth, which coincided with the National Rowing Championships of Great Britain, but entries were still up on last year. Good performances from some of the large Dartmouth contingent ensured them of the Championship of the Day and eight trophies. Dart Totnes, who had won the Championship of the Day at the three previous Championship regattas, were third in the points tally and collected six trophies and Paignton received two trophies. The main Championship event of the day, the Men’s Senior A coxed fours, was won by the Falmouth B crew which included past Champions James Kerr and Colin Blackmore. They won from Falmouth B by half a canvas with Dartmouth’s Matthew Isaac, John Hart, Phil Langman, Terry Wallis and cox, Louise Bellamy, a further four lengths down in third place. In the Men’s Senior B coxed fours the unbeaten Exeter crew ran out winners by a distance from Falmouth with Dartmouth’s Matthew Isaac, John Hart, Phil Langman, Terry Wallis and cox, Louise Bellamy, having rowed at Senior A, a further length behind in third place. Paignton’s Elliot Barton, Robbie Tucker, Simon Henshaw and Paul Henshaw with a borrowed coxswain overcame Championship rivals Exmouth at Men’s Senior C coxed fours in a close race and probably the best race of the day. Paignton won by just half a length from Exmouth with Bideford Reds a further two lengths adrift in third place. Paignton now lead the Championship by nine points. With Dartmouth moving up to Senior C the Novice race was declared void and similarly there was no race at Men’s Under 14 coxed quadruple sculls. At Under 18 coxed fours Championship leaders Bideford Reds beat Dartmouth’s Richie Jeffs, Liam Boyd, Chris China, David Langmead and cox, Marie Dayment, by just a quarter of a length. At Men’s Under 16 coxed quadruple sculls Dartmouth’s Michael Tilley, Richie Jeffs, TJ Lang, Matt Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment, took advantage of the absence of the two Dart Totnes crews to beat Bideford Reds A easily and who were a further distance ahead of third placed Bideford Reds B. Dartmouth also leap-frogged the two Dart Totnes crews in the Championship and now lead Dart Totnes A by four points and Dart Totnes B by five points. In the Ladies Championship coxed fours there was no Senior A or Novice races. At Senior B Exeter beat Falmouth by a canvas and at Senior C Exeter A beat Falmouth by three lengths with Exeter B a further tow lengths down in third place. At Ladies Under 18 coxed fours Dartmouth’s Hanna China, Chrissie Rugg, Sam Tilley, Fiona Dayment and cox, David Langmead, beat the Dart Totnes crew of Christie Rhys Brown, Jacqui Gibbard, Amy Kirkup, Clare Gardner and cox, Rob Crouch-Jones, by a convincing three lengths. But it’s very close in the Championship with Exeter holding a one point advantage over both Dartmouth and Dart Totnes. In the Championship coxed quadruple sculls the Dart Totnes crew of Clre Gardner, Amy Kirkup, Christie Rhys Brown, Emily Murphy and cox, Rob Crouch-Jones, beat Exeter by five lengths who were a distance ahead of third placed Bideford Reds at Under 16. Dart Totnes now hold a commanding ten point lead in the Championship. At Under 14 Bideford Blues beat Bideford Reds by one and a quarter lengths but Dart Totnes still lead the Championship by six points. In the Championship single sculls Elliot Barton of Paignton won at Men’s Senior C; Martin Burridge of Dart Totnes won at Men’s Novice; Chris China of Dartmouth beat Championship rival Steve Clarke of Dart Totnes at Men’s Under 18 to tie up the Championship lead with the two young scullers on 16 points apiece; Bowyer of Exeter won at Men’s Under 16; Sanders of Exeter won at Ladies Senior C; Jess Phillips of Dart Totnes won at Ladies Under 16; and Sam Tilley of Dartmouth sculled over for the trophy at Ladies Under 18. In the supporting events there were wins for Dartmouth’s Terry Wallis and Steve Wallis at Men’s Senior A coxless pairs; Chris China and David Langmead of Dartmouth at Men’s Under 18 double sculls; TJ Lang and Matt Dayment of Dartmouth at Men’s Under 16 double sculls; Hanna China and Fiona Dayment of Dartmouth at Ladies Novice double sculls; Jess Phillips and Devon Cleal of Dart Totnes at Ladies Under 16 double sculls; Simon Kerswell-Jensen at Men’s Under 14 single sculls; and Martin Burridge of Dart Totnes sculled over for the trophy at Men’s Veteran single sculls.
