Head of The Plym

TORQUAY’S veterans gave the youngsters a good drubbing at the Head of the Plym winning the first division and taking third place in the second division despite having to push their ageing bodies over the 3,500 metre course twice.

With a biting breeze and having to row against the wind on bubbly water, crews performed well over the course from Cattewater off the Mount Batten ferry to the Plymouth Rowing Club’s boathouse. Entries were strong with 34 finishers in the first division and 35 in the second division.

Torquay’s Veteran coxed four of Rus Bammens, Gary Letori, Nick Cleasby, Mike Cresser and cox, George Lowe, won the first division in 12 minutes 13.56 seconds ahead of a Plymouth Men’s Open double scull who finished in 12:14.11.

Also in the first division the Teign Scullers Men’s Veteran coxed four of David Nelson, Gary Langworthy, Ian Matthews, Andy Darkin and cox, Mark Eastman, were 11th and second in category in a time of 12:15.55. The Teign Scullers mixed coastal crew of Mike Cullen, Brian Cort, Morag Vannikerk, Barbara Gregory and cox, Nic Bourne, were 29th in 12:19.23 and the Dart Totnes Ladies Under 15 double scull of Josie Bryant and Jasmin Hladjki were 33rd and second in category in 12:22.17.

The second division was won by a Castle Dore Men’s Open quadruple scull in 12:14.10 with a Plymouth Men’s Open coxed four second in 12:14.19. The Torquay veterans, this time competing in the Men’s Open coxed fours category, finished third in 12:15.03. The Teign Scullers/Torquay composite Men’s Open coxed four of Nic Bourne, Andy Darkin, Maurice Dunn, Ian Wilson and a loaned Plymouth cox were 8th in 12:15.47 and the Dart Totnes Men’s Under 16 coxed quadruple scull of Jordan Hall, Charlie Mott, Tom May, Ryan Dunn and cox, Callum Jones, were 9th in 12:15.48.
