Paignton Regatta

PAIGNTON Regatta was cancelled on the eve of the event with force 5 southerly winds forecast for the regatta day. The forecast proved to be correct with the course in Tor Bay totally unrowable and thus vindicating the early decision taken by the organisers.

Initial thoughts of re-scheduling the regatta have been thwarted by the shortage of available dates and Paignton Regatta, the seventh regatta in the West of England ARA ten regatta series, will not be rowed.

The cancellation does have a silver lining for Paignton. Championship rivals Exmouth cannot now amass sufficient points to overtake Paignton’s Men’s Senior C coxed four of Elliot Barton, Robbie Tucker, Paul Henshaw, Simon Henshaw and cox, Charlotte Lane, in the Senior C Championship and Paignton are thereby 2008 Champions at Senior C. This Paignton crew were elevated to Senior B following their win at Exeter.

Similarly the Dart Totnes crew of Christie Rhys Brown, Jacqui Gibbard, Devon Cleal, Emily Murphy and cox, Chelsie Cleal, are Ladies Under 16 coxed quadruple sculls Champions.

Attention now turns to the three remaining regattas in the series with Torbay this coming Saturday (August 23), Dartmouth the following Thursday (August 28) and Bideford on Saturday September 6.
