Plymouth Regatta THE two river Dart clubs, Dartmouth and Dart Totnes, started the new season with a string of successes at Plymouth Regatta, the first regatta in the 2008 West of England ARA ten regatta Championship series. Dart Totnes ended the day with six wins and Dartmouth with seven but Dart Totnes just pipped Dartmouth by three points in the Championship of the day. The regatta was used by organisers Plymouth Rowing Club as a rehearsal for the South Coast Championships which are to be held over the same course on the river Plym on September 12 and 13. The traditional downstream course of 1,000 metres was reversed and extended to 1,650 metres with a stake boat start although Junior, sculls and pairs races were rowed over 1,000 metres. Race timings were crucial in an effort to stage 41 races before the water disappeared with the outgoing tide. All went to plan as the event attracted its largest entry for some time with 141 entries. However, there were no entries for either the Men’s or the Ladies Senior A coxed fours races. Water conditions were good with just a light chop but one Exeter double sculls crew managed to capsize.
Dartmouth’s Chris China, Liam Boyd, Jack Travis,
David Langmead and cox, Marie Dayment, won their first race at Men’s Novice
coxed fours with confidence beating Bideford Blues by a length with Plymouth a
further three quarters of a length down in third place. Bideford Reds won the Men’s Under 18 coxed fours by three lengths from Bideford Blues who were a further three lengths ahead of Exmouth. In the Men’s coxed quadruple sculls Dartmouth’s Michael Tilley, Richie Jeffs, TJ Lang, Matt Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment, who won the Under 14 Championship last season, took their winning ways into the Under 16 category beating the Dart Totnes A crew of Matt Vincent, Sam Pettit, Ollie Garton, Ember Lagden and cox, Maggie Hawkyard, by two lengths with a stylish performance. The Dart Totnes crew of James Lovering, Simon Kerswell. Jensen, Laurie Budden, Meryck Tooley and cox, Peter Kerswell-Jensen, were a further half length behind in third place. At Under 14 Bideford Reds beat Castle Dore by one length. In the Ladies Championship coxed fours Bideford Reds beat Exeter by three lengths at Senior B and Bideford Reds A beat Bideford Reds B by five lengths at Senior C with the same distance to third placed Bideford Blues. The Ladies Novice coxed fours produced an exciting race with the Dart Totnes A crew of Martina Hicks, Lucy Obelensky, Martha Williams, Judith Rice and cox, Stephanie Brown, leading for almost the entirety of the race. However, Plymouth B raced them down and rowed through in final 200 metres to win by a length with Plymouth A taking third place. At Ladies Under 18 coxed fours it was a similar story with Dartmouth’s Hannah China, Sam Tilley, Chrissie Rugg, Fiona Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment, leading off the start and for the first 500 metres only to be overtaken by Exeter who went on to win by two lengths. The Dart Totnes crew of Jacquie Gibbard, Amy Kirkup, Christie Rhys Brown, Claire Gardner and cox, Steve Grimes, were third a further two lengths behind. The Ladies Championship coxed quadruple sculls produced two wins for Dart Totnes. At Under 16 the B crew of Devon Cleal, Jess Phillips, Eve Eyres, Jacqie Gibbard and cox, Chelsie Cleal, beat Exeter by a length with the Dart Totnes A crew of Emily Murphy, Christie Rhys Brown, Amy Kirkup, Claire Gardner and cox, Steve Grimes, third. And at Under 14 the crew of Louise Hawkyard, Isabel Rundle, Jess Larcombe, Katie Prior and cox, Chelsie Cleal, beat Bideford Blues by a length with Bideford Reds third. In the Championship sculls Elliot Barton dead-heated for first place at Men’s Senior B and came second at Senior C. Other South Devon winners were Steve Clarke of Dart Totnes at Men’s Under 18; Meryck Tooley of Dart Totnes at Men’s Under 16; Sophie White of Dart Totnes at Ladies Senior C; and Sam Tilley of Dartmouth at Ladies Under 18.
In the supporting events their were wins for Dartmouth’s Steve Wallis, Yorkie Lomas, Matthew Isaac, Vaughan Bowden, John Hart, Phil Langman, David Hart, Terry Wallis and cox, Louise Bellamy, at Men’s Open eights; Paignton’s Catherine Lovell, Tracey Western, Elliot Barton, Paul Henshaw and cox, Charlotte Lane, at Mixed Senior C coxed fours; twins Terry and Steve Wallis of Dartmouth at Men’s Open coxless pairs; Torquay’s Maurice Dunn and Ian Wilson at Men’s Veteran double sculls; Dartmouth’s TJ Lang and Matt Dayment at Men’s Under 16 double sculls, Simon Kerswell-Jensen and Sam Richardson of Dart Totnes at Men’s Under 14 double sculls; and Dartmouth’s Sam Tilley and Fiona Dayment at Ladies Under 18 double sculls. |
