PLYMOUTH Regatta attracted a good entry of 153 to kick off the 2010 West of England ARA ten regatta Championship series.

The 1000 metre course on the river Plym with stake boat start just above Laira Bridge and the finish off the clubhouse provided superb water and rowing conditions. With forty-three races scheduled the timetable provided a race every five minutes with the start umpires set the task of setting races off on time. The fear being that if times slipped there was the danger of running out of water as the tide went out at the end of the programme. As it was the programme ran to time despite the addition of a re-row at the end of the day’s racing.

Dart Totnes started the season as they did last year by winning the Championship of the day and twelve event trophies. Dartmouth also picked up two trophies.

The three major Championship events, the Men’s Senior A and Senior B coxed fours and the Ladies Senior A coxed fours, were not rowed through lack of entries leaving the Men’s Senior C coxed fours as the main Championship event. The Dart Totnes crew of James Lovering, Sam Pettitt, Meyrick Tooley, Steve Clarke and cox, Maggie Hawkyard, ran out winners from Bideford Reds to celebrate Sam Pettitt’s 18th birthday with Dartmouth’s Chris China, Matt Sheldon, Liam Boyd, David Langmead and cox, Chrissi Rugg, third.

Winners Exmouth were given a close race at Men’s Novice coxed fours and held to a canvas by the Dart Totnes crew of Alex Woodward, Ben Bryon-Edwards, Matt Vincent, Tim Whittet and cox, Will Hawkyard, with Exeter a half length behind in third place.

The Dart Totnes crew of Sam Richardson, Sam Pettitt, James Lovering, Meyrick Tooley and cox, Louise Hawkyard, were comfortable three length winners from Plymouth at Men’s Under 18 coxed fours.

In the Men’s Championship quadruple sculls Plymouth A were distance winners from Plymouth B with Exeter third at Under 16 and the Dart Totnes crew of Callum Jones, Tom Larcombe, Fraser Tooley, Luke Reiser and cox, Maggie Hawkyard, won the Under 14 by four lengths from Paignton’s Tom May, Lewis Lyden, Poppy Disney, Jack Wills and cox, Sam Hallett, who were half a length from third placed Plymouth.

In the Ladies Championship coxed fours the Dart Totnes crew of Lizzie Broad, Kathy Lovering, Natasha Prior, Georgie Cleasby and cox, Heather Jolly, were half length winners from Bideford Reds at Senior B with Dartmouth’s Jenny Pichowski, Anna Lloyd, Lisa Jeffreys, Suzie Bowden and cox, Marie Dayment, a further length down in third place. At Senior C Falmouth beat Exeter by five lengths with Dartmouth’s Jenny, Lisa Jeffreys, Suzie Bowden, Fiona Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment, a further three quarters of length behind in third place. Exeter beat Bideford Reds by a distance at Novice with third placed Plymouth a further half length behind and at Under 18 Exeter beat the Dart Totnes crew of Iris Tapper, Jade Knight, Emma Reiser, Louise Hawkyard and cox, Maggie Hawkyard, by one and a half lengths with Bideford Reds a distance behind in third place.

In the Ladies Championship quadruple sculls Bideford Blues beat Exeter by three lengths at Under 16 with the Dart Totnes crew of Jess Larcombe, Jade Knight, Emma Reiser, Louise Hawkyard and cox, Meyrick Tooley, a further half length down and at Under 14 the Dart Totnes crew of Lucy Chudley, Katie Prior, Verity Phillips, Phoebe Clarke and cox, Dakota Ferrara, were distance winners from Plymouth with Paignton’s Libby Hogan, Louise Manning, Alicia Wilks, Holly Hulme and cox, Sam Hallett, third.
