Plymouth Regatta

THE 2009 West of England ARA ten regatta Championship series got under way with a superb day’s rowing at Plymouth Regatta. The entry list of 160, the best for the regatta for over a quarter of a century, provided an early indication of the depth of the rowing strength within the region. An extensive programme of 49 races for 41 events in fine weather ensured a successful regatta.

A 1,000 course on the river Plym with a stake boat start just above Laira Bridge, finishing upstream at the Plymouth Rowing Club headquarters. A crosswind produced a light chop for crews to contend with which at times veered to produce a headwind in some races. For much of the regatta the wind was too strong for stake boat starts and umpires had to revert to free starts.

Dart Totnes provided a large contingent, despite crews being at Marlow Regatta and Women’s Henley, which produced sixteen wins to pick up the Championship of the Day trophy. Dartmouth had a couple of wins including a good win in the Men’s eights but it was a trophyless day for Torquay and Paignton although Paignton encouragingly boated several new Junior crews.

With no entries for the major Championship event, the Men’s Senior A coxed fours, the Men’s Senior B coxed fours became the prime Championship race. This was a three horse race between Exeter, Bideford Reds and the Dart Totnes crew of Paul Henshaw, Tom Whittet, Simon Henshaw, Robbie Tucker and cox, Steph Brown. Exeter had a methodical performance to win by two and a half lengths from Dart Totnes with Bideford Reds a further four lengths down in third place.

Exeter beat Falmouth by three lengths at Men’s Senior C coxed fours with Exmouth just a further three feet behind in third place and at Men’s Novice coxed fours Exeter were the winners by one and a half lengths from the Dart Totnes crew of Tim Whittet, Richard Rollie, Jared Hemming, Alex Woodward and cox, Steph Brown, with Bideford Reds two lengths down in third place.

The Men’s Under 18 coxed fours was between Dart Totnes, Dartmouth and Exmouth. The Dart Totnes crew of Lewis van Diggele, Sam Pettitt, Elliott Legg, Steve Clarke and cox, Owen Small, made the early running with Dartmouth’s Richie Jeffs, Liam Boyd, Chris China, David Langmead and cox, Marie Dayment, and Exmouth chasing. At about halfway Dartmouth were just settling into a good rhythm when Exmouth seemed attracted to the Dartmouth crew. They got so close that there was a clash of blades causing Dartmouth to stop rowing. By the time Dartmouth got going Dart Totnes and Exmouth were well away. The final outcome was an easy win for Dart Totnes. Exmouth were disqualified for impeding Dartmouth, and Dartmouth were given second place.

Dart Totnes won both of the Championship Men’s coxed quadruple sculls. At Under 16 the crew of Sam Richardson, Simon Kerswell-Jensen, Alex Rowe, Elliot Legg and cox, Devon Cleal, were half length winners from Plymouth with Castle Dore a distance down in third place and at Under 14 Simon Kerswell-Jensen, Alex Rowe, Callum Jones, Fraser Tooley and cox, T Larcombe, were three quarters of a length winners from Plymouth with Bideford Blues a distance behind in third place.

In the Ladies Championship coxed fours Plymouth beat Exeter by three lengths at Senior A and at Senior B Exeter beat Bideford Reds by one and a half lengths with the Dart Totnes crew of Maggie Hawkyard, Sarah Mackness, Kathy Lovering, Natasha Prior and cox, Claire Gardner, a further three lengths behind in third place. At Senior C the Dart Totnes crew of Nicki Pettitt, Mandy Larcombe, Zoe Butcher, Janet Richardson and cox, Chelsie Cleal, ran away with the race to win by a distance from Bideford Reds with Exeter third. The Under 18 race produced another win for Dart Totnes with Claire Gardner, Christie Rhys Brown, Jess Phillips, Jacqui Gibbard and cox, Owen Small, winning by three lengths from Exeter with Paignton’s Beth Hogan, Becky Stanley, Maris Schubert, Annabelle Ferguson and cox, Ian Wilson, a further two lengths behind in third place.

In the Ladies Championship coxed quadruple sculls Bideford Blues were winners at Under 16 by one and a half lengths from the Dart Totnes crew of Maya Trepat, Jess Phillips, Izzy Rundle, Jacqui Gibbard and cox, Devon Cleal, with the Dart Totnes B crew of Chelsie Cleal, Emma Reiser, Louise Hawkyard, Jess Larcombe and cox, J Knight, third. At Under 14 Exeter were easy winners from the Dart Totnes crew of Emily Bibby, Iris Tapper, Verity Phillips, Phoebe Clarke and cox, Devon Cleal, with Bideford Reds B third.

In the Championship single sculls Lewis van Diggele of Dart Totnes won at Men’s Senior C; Aaron Wilkins of Falmouth won at Men’s Novice; Sam Pettitt of Dart Totnes won at Men’s Under 18; Jacob Dawson of Plymouth won at Men’s Under 16; Kate Conway of Falmouth won at Ladies Novice; and A Jackson of Bideford Reds won at Ladies Under 16.

In the supporting events there were South Devon wins for Dartmouth’s Yorkie Lomas, David Langmead, Steve Wallis, Liam Boyd, Simon Henshaw, Vaughan Bowden, David Hart, Terry Wallis and cox, Chrissy Rugg, at Men’s Open eights; the Dart Totnes crew of Maggie Hawkyard, Christie Rhys Brown, Paul Henshaw, Simon Henshaw and cox, Claire Gardner, at Mixed Senior B coxed fours; the Dart Totnes crew of Alex Woodward, Kathy Lovering, Robbie Tucker, Natasha Prior and cox, Claire Gardner, at Mixed Senior C coxed fours; the Dart Totnes crew of Jared Hemming, Zoe Butcher, Janet Richardson, Richard Rollie and cox, Nicki Pettitt, at Mixed Novice coxed fours; Terry and Steve Wallis of Dartmouth at Men’s Senior A coxless pairs; Lewis van Diggele and Steve Clarke of Dart Totnes at Men’s Novice coxless pairs; Martin Burridge and Tony Szender of Dart Totnes at Men’s Senior C double sculls; Simon Kerswell-Jensen and Alex Rowe of Dart Totnes at Men’s Under 16 double sculls; Louise Hawkyard and Jess Larcombe of Dart Totnes at Ladies Under 16 double sculls; Martin Burridge of Dart Totnes at Men’s Veteran single sculls; and Emily Bibby of Dart Totnes at Ladies Under 14 single sculls.
