Local Whaler Rowing at Dartmouth Regatta

THE local rowing of the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta got under way on Sunday with yet another bumper entry. In total there were 253 entries for the whaler and cadet boat rowing races necessitating 77 races over three days.

There were few upsets in the heats which culminate with the 21 finals on Friday (August 29) when racing starts at 12.20pm.

Men’s Over 45 Whaler - Heats not rowed because of scratchings. Crews to final are The Cherub, Floating Bridge Inn, Anchorstone Café, Compass Marine, Café Alf Resco A and Birssy’s Bar.

THE second day of the local rowing at the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta commenced with another 7 heats with 28 crews to follow on from the previous day’s racing in which 190 crews competed in 36 heats.

The heats were followed by 12 semi-finals and the regatta’s first rowing final, the Long Distance Whaler Race.

Five men’s crews and two ladies crews started from Maypool in the 3000 metre long distance whaler race finishing at the Lower Ferry. By the time that the crews came into view from the Embankment at the Higher Ferry the Dartmouth Arms crew of David Sharam, Matthew Atkins, David Collins, Darren Hopley, Barry Woodgate, Shaun Barker, David Rogers, Vince Southern and cox, Peter Collins, were three lengths up on the Floating Bridge. Although the Floating Bridge managed to pull back a length over the final 1000 metres the Dartmouth Arms were given the verdict of a two length win from the Floating Bridge with a distance to third placed West Country Worms. The first ladies crew to finish were the Royal Castle Hotel with West Country Worms second.
