Torbay Regatta
TORBAY Royal Regatta, the eighth regatta in the West of England ARA ten regatta Championship series, proved to be a tremendous success with good conditions for rowers and scullers. The regatta had attracted 73 entries to compete over the 1000 metre course from Livermead Head to Hollicombe Head and whilst there were gusty spells and a headwind the water remained rowable despite water disturbance from other craft late in the programme. The day belonged to Dartmouth who walked off with eight event wins and for the third time this season, the Championship of the day. Paignton also picked up a trophy. The major Championship event, the Men’s Senior A coxed fours, was not rowed through lack of entries leaving the Men’s Senior B coxed fours as the main race in which Paignton’s Elliot Barton, Robbie Tucker, Paul Henshaw, Simon Henshaw and cox, Charlotte Lane, rowed following their elevation from Senior C. Already Champions at Senior C the Paignton crew made short work of Dartmouth’s Matthew Isaac, Phil Langman, John Hart, Terry wallis and cox, Louise Bellamy, beating them by three lengths. At Men’s Senior C coxed fours Exmouth ran out two length winners from Dartmouth’s Jack Kirby, David Langmead, Liam Boyd, Chris China and cox, Marie Dayment, and at Men’s Novice coxed fours Dartmouth’s TJ Lang, Michael Tilley, Richie Jeffs, Matt Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment, won by a length from Bideford Reds with Torquay’s Jamie Dawe, Carver Tedstone, Nick Gagg, Gary Spencer and cox, Katie Cudmore, third. This win gives Dartmouth the Novice fours Championship. In the Men’s Under 18 coxed fours Bideford Reds were two length winners from Dartmouth’s TJ Lang, David Langmead, Liam Boyd, Chris China and cox, Marie Dayment, who were just a canvas ahead of Exmouth. In the Men’s Championship coxed quadruple sculls Dartmouth’s Michael Tilley, Richie Jeffs, TJ Lang, Matt Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment, were three length winners at Under 16 from Bideford Reds A with Bideford Reds B third. This win secured the Championship for Dartmouth. And at Under 14 Bideford Reds easily beat Torquay’s Taylor Jones, Charlie Mott, Zoe Dinsdale, Katie Cudmore and cox, Richard Cudmore. In the Ladies Championship coxed fours Exeter A beat Bideford Reds A by four lengths at Senior C with Exmouth a further two lengths down. At Novice Bideford Reds beat Exeter by a length and at Under 18 Exeter beat Dartmouth’s Hanna China, Sam Tilley, Chrissy Rugg, Fiona Dayment and cox, Louise Bellamy, with Bideford Reds third. In the Championship Ladies coxed quadruple sculls Exeter won the Under 16 from Bideford Reds with Paignton’s Becky Knight, Chloe Nott, Laura Tucker, Beth Holgan and cox, Sam Hallet, third and at Under 14 Bideford Blues beat Bideford Reds. In the Championship single sculls there were wins for Malloy of Exmouth at Men’s Senior C; Curtis of Bideford Reds at Novice; Chris China of Dartmouth at Men’s Under 18; Michael Tilley of Dartmouth at Men’s Under 16; and Sam Tilley of Dartmouth at Ladies Senior C and Ladies Under 18. Sam Tilley’s win at Under 18 gave her the Championship but Elliot Barton missed the opportunity of securing the Men’s Senior C Championship when he finished the wrong side of the finish marker when leading his race. In the supporting events Dartmouth were winners at Men’s Under 18 double sculls with Chris China and David Langmead and at Ladies Novice double sculls with Hanna China and Fiona Dayment.
