Totnes

Hilary Bastone 29.06.08. Rowing.1.

THE massive entry of 206 for Totnes & Bridgetown Royal Regatta necessitated 122 races and the scheduling of a race every four minutes over the 1000 metre course. A mammoth task for the officials and particularly for the start umpires. But superb organisation and exceptional umpiring ensured that the event ran to time and actually finished before the programmed finish. And the competitors played their part arriving at the start early for racing. Even the tide held up well to provide plenty of water and excellent rowing conditions.

Needless to say that the home club, Dart Totnes, swept all before them to take their third Championship of the day this season from three regattas. The club also won nineteen of the forty-nine events on offer. Dartmouth picked up four trophies, Paignton three and Torquay two.

With no entries for either Men’s Senior A or Ladies Senior B coxed fours the major Championship event was the Men’s Senior B coxed fours. Dartmouth were eliminated in the heats by Exmouth who went through to the final to meet Exeter and the Dart Totnes crew of Nick Lovering, Peter Kerswell-Jensen, Matt Hemming, Stephen Wilson and cox, Martina Hicks. Exeter, who had won the two previous Championship regattas at Plymouth and Wimbleball again ran out winners but by just a length from Dart Totnes with Exmouth well back in third place.

At Men’s Senior C coxed fours Paignton’s Robbie Tucker, Simon Henshaw, Elliot Barton, Paul Henshaw and cox, Charlotte Lane, made light work of Falmouth in their heat winning easily. And in the final their power and aggression gave them a one length win over Exeter with Championship rivals Exmouth down in third place. Paignton now lead Exmouth by five points in the Championship.

In the Men’s Novice coxed fours Dartmouth’s Chris China, Liam Boyd, Jack Kirby, David Langmead and cox, Marie Dayment, made it three wins out of three this season. They beat Exeter by four lengths in their heat and then went on to beat Bideford Reds by two lengths in the final with Exeter, who came through a repechage heat to make the final, third. This third win for the Dartmouth crew means that they are now elevated to the Senior C status.

The Under 18 coxed fours was a straight final with Bideford Blues winning from Bideford Reds with Paignton’s Sam Morris, Louis Nichols, Steven Marshall, John Dart and cox, Sam Hallett, third.

The final of the Men’s Under 16 coxed quadruple sculls again came down to a race between Dartmouth, Dart Totnes A and Dart Totnes B following the heats. Dartmouth won at Plymouth and Dart Totnes B won at Wimbleball. This time it was the turn of the Dart Totnes A crew of Ollie Garton, Drew Parkinson, Sam Petitt, Matt Vincent and cox, Maggie Hawkyard, who won by half a length from the Dart Totnes B crew of Meryck Tooley, James Lovering, Laurie Budden, Elliott Legg and cox Steve Grimes, with Dartmouth’s Michael

Tilley, Richie Jeffs, TJ Lang, Matt Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment, third. Dart Totnes A now lead the Championship by just one point.

Dart Totnes also won the Men’s Under 14 coxed quadruple sculls with the crew of Robin Hayward, Emily Bibby, Simon Kerswell-Jensen, Louise Hawkyard and cox, Chelsie Cleal. Despite rowing with two females in the crew against all male crews Dart Totnes beat Bideford Reds easily with Castle Dore third. Dart Totnes lead the Championship by two points.

In the Ladies Championship fours Dart Totnes had a clean sweep of wins with the exception of the Ladies Senior B coxed fours which was won by Falmouth fresh from their successful trip to Women’s Henley where they reached the last 16. This time out they beat Exeter by half a length with Bideford Reds a further three quarters of a length behind in third place. Paignton had lost to Falmouth in the heats and then were eliminated by Bideford Reds in the repechage heat.

The Dart Totnes crew of Chloe Murdoch, Laura Moran, Fay Sheppard, Natasha Prior and cox, Suzanne Hutchings, won the Ladies Senior C coxed fours by a length from the previously unbeaten Bideford Reds with Exeter third. The same crew also won the Ladies Novice coxed fours by a length from Exeter with Bideford Reds a further half length behind.

At Ladies Under 18 coxed fours the Dart Totnes crew of Jacqui Gibbard, Amy Kirkup, Christie Rhys Brown, Claire Gardner and cox, Maggie Hawkyard, beat Dartmouth’s Hanna China, Chrissie Rugg, Sam Tilley, Fiona Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment, by a length with Bideford Reds a further length down in third place.

In the Ladies Championship coxed quadruple sculls the Dart Totnes Under 16 crew of Emily Murphy, Christie Rhys Brown, Amy Kirkup, Claire Gardner and cox, Suzanne Hutchings, beat Exeter in the final with Bideford Reds third and at Under 14 the Dart Totnes crew of Emily Bibby, Jess Larcombe, Isabel Rundle, Louise Hawkyard and cox, Chelsie Cleal, beat Bideford Blues easily with Bideford Reds a further distance behind in third place.

In the Championship single sculls their were wins for Barnaby Stentiford of Dart Totnes at Men’s Senior B; Elliot Barton of Paignton at Men’s Senior C; Martin Burridge of Dart Totnes at Men’s Novice; Steve Clark of Dart Totnes at Men’s Under 18; and a scull over for Sam Tilley of Dartmouth at Ladies Under 18.

In the supporting events their were wins for Paignton’s Tracey Western, Catherine Lovell, Elliot Barton, Paul Henshaw and cox, Charlotte Lane, at Mixed Senior C coxed fours; Dartmouth twins Terry and Stephen Wallis at Men’s Senior A coxless pairs; Dartmouth’s TJ Lang and Matt Dayment at Men’s Under 16 double sculls; and Torquay’s Maurice Dunn and Ian Wilson at Men’s Senior B coxless pairs and Men’s Veteran double sculls.
