Totnes Mini Head
THE Totnes Mini Head, organised by Dart Totnes Rowing Club, over a course of 3,000 metres on the river Dart at Totnes attracted 158 entries from clubs from around the region and a few from further afield including British Forces Rowing Clubs who used the event to stage their annual Plum Pudding Regatta. The entries were split into three divisions to allow for doubling up and even trebling up in some cases. Conditions were tough for crews with a strong northerly wind facing them as they made their way up river to finish at the turning bay just below the clubhouse. Crews in the first division had the advantage of a flooding tide with the second division held on the top of the tide and crews in the third division having to row against an ebbing tide but a slightly lighter wind. The first division, with 69 entries, was won by the Dart Totnes Men’s quadruple scull of Seb Baranzano, Mladen Macanovic, Peter Kerswell-Jensen and Matt Hemming in a time of 10 minutes 22 seconds. Fourth overall, and fastest coxed four, were Torquay’s Men’s Veteran C coxed four of Rus Bammens, Gary Letori, Nick Cleasby, Mike Cresser and cox, George Lowe, in 12:01. This twice West of England ARA Senior A coxed fours Championship crew were making a welcomed first competitive appearance since their last race in 2002. Dart Totnes picked up category winners with their Men’s Under 18 coxed fours of Matt Vincent, Ollie Garton, Lauries Budden, Steve Clarke and cox, Nick Lovering, 6th overall in 12:07; Elliot Barton at Men’s Senior A single sculls, 7th overall in 12:11; The Men’s Under 16 double scull of Merryck Tooley and James Lovering, 8th overall in 12:14; Hugh Tubbs at Men’s Veteran D single sculls, 20th overall in 13:05; Catherine Wiseman and Natasha Prior at Ladies Novice double sculls, 38th overall in 14:18; Louise Hawkyard at Ladies Under 14 single sculls, 60th overall in 16:11; and the Mixed Under 14 coxed quadruple scull of Katie Prior, Tom Larcombe, Eliza Tulberry, Jack Miller and cox, Claire Gardner, 62nd overall in 16:21. The second division, with 43 entries, was won by the Dart Totnes Men’s Veteran quadruple scull of Peter Atkinson, John Harris, Hugh Tubbs, and Ray Davies in 11:24.
