                            2008 WEARA AWARDS DINNER

THE West of England ARA President’s Night held at the Quality Hotel in Plymouth was tinged with sadness following the death at the beginning of August of Derek Rickard, the West of England ARA President. His upturned single scull had been discovered on the river Plym and his body later found on the mud flats near Laira Bridge. He had been airlifted to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The popular 60 year-old had been an active sculler and had done much to promote the sport of rowing in his home city of Plymouth and was enjoying his year as President of the Association. He had been looking forward to his club hosting the South Coast Championships in September and of course to his President’s Night.

Since his death his club has rotated members to take the Presidential position and on this occasion Derek’s daughter, Laura Rickard, donned the Presidential chain of office.

South Devon clubs enjoyed a successful season and were prominent in receiving Championship awards with Dartmouth winning five, Dart Totnes three and Paignton three.

The major Championship, the Men’s Senior A coxed fours, was awarded to Dartmouth’s Matthew Isaac, Phil Langman, John Hart, Terry Wallis and cox, Louise Bellamy, a Championship that Dartmouth has on more occasions than any other club since it’s inception in 1896. However, this thirty-fifth winning of the region’s major Championship for Dartmouth has taken a little while coming since the 34th win in 1994.

Dartmouth were also Championship winners at Men’s Novice coxed fours with David Langmead, Liam Boyd, TJ Lang, Chris China and cox, Marie Dayment; at Men’s Under 16 coxed quadruple sculls with Michael Tilley, Richie Jeffs, TJ Lang, Matt Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment; at Men’s Under 18 single sculls with Chris China; and at Ladies Under 18 single sculls with Sam Tilley.

Elliot Barton was involved in all three of Paignton’s Championship wins. He won both the Men’s Senior B and Senior C single sculls and along with Robbie Tucker, Paul Henshaw, Simon Henshaw and cox, Charlotte Lane, won the Men’s Senior C coxed fours Championship.

Dart Totnes were Championship winners at Men’s Under 14 coxed quadruple sculls with Izzy Rundle, Louise Hawkyard, Emily Bibby, Sam Richardson, Simon Kerswell-Jensen and Chelsie Cleal (cox); at Ladies Under 16 coxed quadruple sculls with Devon Cleal, Claire Gardner, Christie Rhys-Brown, Jacqui Gibbard, Amy Kirkup, Emily Murphy and cox, Rob Crowter-Jones; and at Ladies Under 14 coxed quadruple sculls with Izzy Rundle, Jess Larcombe, Emily Bibby, Louise Hawkyard and cox, Chelsie Cleal
