Wimbleball Regatta

The major Championship event, the Men’s Senior A coxed fours, was staged for the first time this season with there being no race at Plymouth last week. Dartmouth’s Matthew Isaac, John Hart, Phil Langman, Terry Wallis, and cox, Louise Bellamy, were one and a half length winners from Exmouth with the Dart Totnes crew of Mick Rolley, Simon Gifford-Mead, Alan Langmaid, Rob Brereton and cox, Steve Grimes, using the race as a warm-up for the Veteran coxed fours, a further four lengths back in third place. Dartmouth’s bowman, Matthew Isaac, said, “We rowed the Senior A after the Senior B and we were chuffed with our row which went really well”.

 

At Men’s Senior B coxed fours Exeter beat Exmouth by a length with Dartmouth’s Matthew Isaac, John Hart, Phil Langman, Terry Wallis and cox, Louise Bellamy, third a further three lengths behind.

In the Men’s Senior C coxed fours Paignton’s Elliot Barton, Robbie Tucker, Simon Henshaw, Paul Henshaw and cox, Charlotte Lane,  showed real grit and determination to reverse the previous week’s result and beat Exmouth by one and a half lengths with Bideford Reds one a quarter lengths back in third place. Bowman Elliot Barton, who was also a runner-up at Men’s Senior B and Senior C single sculls, said, “This time out we tried to improve our technique by rowing at half power. This worked well and we had a one hundred per cent better row.”

Dartmouth’s  David Langmead, Chris China, TJ Lang, Liam Boyd and cox, Marie Dayment, overwhelmed Bideford Reds by one and a half lengths at Men’s Novice coxed fours with Exeter a further two lengths down in third place. Exeter beat Bideford Reds by three lengths at Men’s Under 18 coxed fours.

In the Men’s Championship coxed quadruple sculls Dartmouth’s Michael Tilley, Richie Jeffs, TJ Lang, Matt Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment, slipped up and finished third at Under 16 after winning at Plymouth. They were well and truly beaten by the winners, the Dart Totnes crew of  Elliott Legg, Laurie Budden, James Lovering, Meyrick Tooley and cox, Steve Grimes, and the second placed Dart Totnes B crew of Matt Vincent, Sam Pettit, Drew Parkinson, Ollie Garton and cox, Louise Hawkyard.  The A crew beating the B crew by a length with Dartmouth a further three lengths adrift.  At Under 14 the Dart Totnes mixed crew of  Sam Richardson, Simon Kerswell-Jensen, Issy Rundle, Louise Hawkyard and cox, Chelsea Cleal, beat Bideford Reds by a distance.

In the Ladies Championship coxed fours there was again no Senior A and at Senior B Bideford Reds beat Exeter by a distance. At Senior C Bideford Reds A beat Bideford Reds B by two lengths with the Dart Totnes crew of Kathy Phillips, Jan Woodruff, Kathy Lovering, Tash Prior and cox, Maggie Hawkyard, just half a length down in third place. Exeter A won the Novice by a distance from Bideford Reds who were a further distance from third placed Exeter B. At Under 18 Exeter were three length winners over the Dart Totnes crew of Clare Gardner, Amy Kirkup, Christie Rhys Brown, Jacqui Gibbard and cox, Maggie Hawkyard, with Dartmouth’s Hannah China, Sam Tilley, Chrissie Rugg, Fiona Dayment  and cox, Michael Tilley, a further one and a quarter lengths behind in third place.

The Ladies Championship coxed quadruple sculls again produced wins for Dart Totnes. At Under 16 the crew of Emily Murphy, Amy Kirkup, Christie Rhys Brown, Clare Gardner and cox, Martha Williams, had a comfortable win of four lengths over Exeter who were a further four lengths from Bideford Reds and at Under 14 the crew of Emily Bibby, Jess Larcombe, Issy Rundle, Louise Hawkyard and cox, Chelsie Cleal, were also four length winners from Bideford Blues who finished four lengths ahead of Bideford Reds.

In the Championship single sculls there were wins for Chris China of Dartmouth at Men’s Under 18 who beat former clubmate Steve Clarke of Dart Totnes who had beaten him the previous week at Plymouth; Meyrick Tooley of Dart Totnes at Men’s Under 16; and Sam Tilley of Dartmouth repeating her Plymouth success with another win at Wimbleball.

 

In the supporting events there were wins for Mick Rolley, Simon Gifford-Mead, Alan Langmaid, Rob Brereton and cox, Steve Grimes, of Dart Totnes at Men’s Veteran coxed fours; David Langmead and Chris China of Dartmouth at Men’s Under 18 double sculls; James Lovering and Meyrick Tooley of Dart Totnes at Men’s Under 16 double sculls; and Rose Willoughby and Judith Rice of Dart Totnes at Ladies Novice single sculls and Ladies Under 18 double sculls.
